Indian Vedic Astrology: A brief Introduction
The usage of astrological and astronomical calculations in India can be traced back to the Vedic era. Vedic seers, however, made it more useful by adopting the calculation of time based on the movements of Sun and the Moon. These calculations were implied towards deciding auspicious times for Vedic sacrifices, celebrating festivals and for the arrangements related to the agriculture. This information on the early application of astrological calculations can be found in many places. The sages during the Rigvedic era expanded the knowledge of solar and lunar calendars. They also had acquired the knowledge of the core elements like sunrise, sunset, moonrise, zodiac signs, constellations, planets etc and presented their good and bad effects on the humans. The approximate era of Rigveda is about 4000 B.C. Similarly there is a mention of named of 12 months in the Yajurveda. As the time progressed, astrology also evolved and the names of the months were later associated with the Nakshatras (constellations) viz. month of Chaitra is derived from the constellation “Chitra”, same way 12 months were named after 12 constellations. Calculations of date and many other such principles are also found. Vedic jyotisha has calculations starting from small level and it stretches up to yuga calculations. Even in the scriptures like Ramayana and Mahabharata, there is mention of planets, signs, and many astrological details.
Prevalence of Indian Vedic Astrology
The prevalence of Vedic astrology had begun during the era of Varahamihira. During this period, there was an expansion of various principles of astrology. There is also mention of the results of various planets and constellations. Indian astrology is also called as “Vedic Astrology” or “Hindu Astrology”. This means that these are Vedic principles for the welfare of humans. We can find detailed mention of astrology in the Vedic scriptures. The articles written about our ancient civilization, we come to know about the visionary ideologies of our ancestors. Karma is of prime importance in the Vedic astrology. This is because; the fate of our present birth is directly based on the deeds of the previous births. There is mention of Vedanga Jyotisha in many puranic scriptures as well. Vedic astrology is related to the daily ubiquity, this is also explained in the Puranas. The astrology is chiefly divided into three sections namely, Siddhanta, Samhita, and Hora. Herein, we are providing you the brief introduction on these sections. We would discuss these topics elaborately in the upcoming articles.
Siddhanta Jyotish also deals with the calculations of planets and constellations. It involves many mathematical and calculation related aspects like making of Panchangam (ephemeris) etc. This helps us in knowing about the good and bad happenings of the future. It is believed that the major planets to be studies are Sun, Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus, and Saturn.
Vedic Astrology and its method of calculation
Various calculative approaches of the Vedic astrology are found scattered in many texts. But the main sources of the calculations are Surya Siddhanta, Graha Laghava etc. We can find many subtle aspects of time calculation in the ancient Vedic astrology. These texts have many calculation methods for prana, pala, ghati, kala, vikala, kshana, ahoratra, paksha, shravana masa, ritu, ayana, bhramana chakra, varsha, and yuga. The good and bad effects of planets can be known only by adopting accurate calculations. Without proper knowledge of time, it is extremely difficult to know about the astrological aspects.
Phalita Jyotish related to knowing about the good and bad effects of the planets on an individual. From the Vedic era itself, great masters have always mentioned about the good and the bad happenings of an individual based on the movements of Sun, Moon etc. One Rashi(sign) consist of 30 degrees. On the orbit, the transit of various planets for different duration gives positive or negative results. The positive and negative effects in the life of a person are carefully analyzed. graha, bhava, rashi, yuti, sthiti, drishti etc are some of these aspects to be studied. These are key factors towards the positive and negative results and also towards knowing the time at which the event would take place. The events from the birth and until the death are known with the help of Phalita jyotisha.
Vedic astrology in itself is very important and helpful. It was not only utilized in the Vedic era but even today it holds equal importance. Through this science, people try to know about the good and bad times in the human life.
