Eminent American economist, Abhijit Vinayak Banerjee, Noble Prize Awardee, was born on 21 February 1961 in Mumbai, India to the family of Nirmala Banerjee (mother) and Dipak Banerjee (father). His father was a noted Indian economist. Abhijit did his initial schooling in Kolkata-based South Point High School and completed his graduation (B.Sc. Honors) in Economics in 1981. He did his Master degree in Economics from the Jawaharlal Nehru University, Delhi in 1983. He also attended Harvard University during his academic pursuit of Ph.D. in Economics. Abhijit is the Ford Foundation International Professor of Economics at Massachusetts Institute of Technology. In recognition to his and two other prominent economics (Esther Duflo France-American, and Michael Kremer from America) experimental approach to alleviating global poverty, received Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Sciences in the year 2019. Abhijit is a co-founder of Abdul Latif Jameel Poverty Action Lab, a global research center for alleviating poverty. For an American non-profit research and policy organization called Innovations for Poverty Action (IPA), Abhijit is a research affiliate, apart from gracing the Consortium on Financial Systems and Poverty as its member. He also co-authored Poor Economics: A Radical Rethinking of the Way to Fight Global Poverty that talks about effective solutions to global poverty. He and his wife, Esther Duflo, authored the book. Abhijit was first married to Dr. Arundhati Tuli Banerjee. Later he married his co-researcher, MIT professor Esther Duflo. The couple has two children. The son, Kabir Banerjee born out of the first marriage of Abhijit died of an accident in the year 2015. Abhijit is the recipient of the Nobel Prize in Economics in 2019 that he received along with two other co-researchers; Esther Duflo and Michael Kremer.
