Kiran Bedi, Famous Social Activist, Retired IPS Officer, and an active politician, is an influential person, particularly known for her fearlessly contributing service as an Indian Police Service officer. At present, she is serving as the Lieutenant Governor of Puducherry. Bedi was the first Indian woman to have served as an IPS officer and worked for the tenure of 35 years till she retired from the service voluntarily as Director General, Bureau of Police Research and Development, in the year 2007. She was born to an affluent Punjabi family in Amritsar of Punjab on 9 June 1949. She received her graduation (BA (Honours) in English) from Government College for Women at Amritsar in 1968, and a master’s degree in political science from Panjab University, Chandigarh. During the pursuit of her career as an IPS officer, she obtained a law degree from Delhi University in 1988, and a Ph.D. from IIT Delhi’s Department of Social Sciences in 1993.
Bedi has been a national junior tennis champion and won many titles at national and state-level championships between the period of 1965 and 1978. She served Delhi, Goa, Chandigarh, and Mizoram as an IPS officer. Later she served Delhi’s Chanakyapuri area as an Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP). During her posting in West Delhi, Bedi was accredited to have brought down the scaling crime counts on women. She was also assigned to oversee traffic arrangements as traffic police during the time when India was hosting the 9th Asian Game on November 19, 1982, which continued to December 4, 1982, in Delhi, India. While serving as an IG (Inspector General) to the Delhi Prisons in 1993, Bedi introduced various reformative measures at Tihar Jail for which she received the Ramon Magsaysay Award in 1994. She was appointed as Police Advisor to Secretary-General of the United Nations handling the Department of Peace Keeping Operations, the first Indian woman to have achieved that feat. She joined BJP in January 2015 and fought for Delhi Assembly Election held in 2015 as the party’s chief ministerial candidate but lost the election. Author and politician, Kiran Bedi is the recipient of several honorary awards; including President’s Police Medal for Gallantry in 1979, FrMaschio Humanitarian Award in 1995, Mother Teresa Memorial National Award for Social Justice in 2005, and L’Oreal Paris Femina Women Award in 2014.
