Modi was a general secretary of Gujarat LokSangharshSamiti during a state of emergency enforced by the then government of Indira Gandhi in 1975. It was a time when the RSS committee was banned as a result of the enforced emergency and so, Modi was compelled to go underground and lived his life in disguise to avoid being arrested. He also provided sanctuary to the people wanted by the government and arranged financial supports for political refugees and activists. He also authored a book written in Gujarati, Sangharsh Ma Gujarat– talking at length about the events that took place during the state of emergency in India. In 1978 Modi was made a regional organizer of RSS monitoring the activities of the party in the regions of Surat and Vadodara but later he was transferred to Delhi and was assigned to write the history of the Emergency in the version of RSS. He came back to Gujarat in 1985 wherein RSS assigned him to Bharatiya Janata Party for which he organized a successful campaign for Ahmedabad municipal election thus helping the BJP to win the election easily. His contribution in helping BJP win the Ahmedabad election did not go unnoticed and he was rewarded later by being elected the organizing secretary of the party’s Gujarat unit in 1987. His fame in BJP kept rising and while being a member of National Election Committee of BJP, Modi organized Ram RathYatra for L.KAdvani in 1990 and EktaYatra(1991-1992) for Murli Manohar Joshi. After having taken a political hiatus in 1992 he was insisted by Advani to come back and so Modi devised a successful electoral strategy as a BJP secretary in 1994 on the premise of which the party won the state assembly elections held in 1995. His phenomenal contributions within the BJP in scripting victory for the party had finally helped Modi become the general secretary of the BJP in 1988.

Narendra Modi became the Chief Minister of Gujarat on October 7, 2001 after Keshubhai Patel whose political standing was tattered by a row of allegations concerning abuse of power, corruption and poor governance in the state of Gujarat and so Modi was opted for as an efficient replacement for Patel to become the CM of Gujarat. The name of Narendra Modi courted controversy post the felonious Gujarat riots in 2002 which claimed nearly 2000 lives as estimated by some independent sources.
