He was born on 29 August 1959 in Chennai, Tamil Nadu, to the family of late veteran actor Nageswara Rao Akkineni and his wife Annapurna Akkineni. Besides being known as a film actor, Nagarjuna is man of versatile talents as a producer, a television presenter and an entrepreneur. In Hyderabad where his parents shifted from Chennai, Nagarjuna did his initial schooling at the Hyderabad Public School and Little Flower Junior College, and obtained one year of his Bachelor of Engineering from the College of Engineering, Guindy, Anna University. He pursued mechanical engineering from Eastern Michigan University in Ypsilanti, Michigan. He is married to Lakshmi Daggubati who happens to be the sister of leading film star, Venkatesh, and the daughter of a distinguished film-director, D. Ramanaidu. However, this marriage did not sustain and the couple was divorced in 1990. They had one son, Naga Chaitanya. Later Nagarjuna married to Amala Akkineni, a noted film actress and an animal welfare activist.
Nagarjunais the recipient of nine state Nandi Awards, 3 Filmfare Awards South and a National Film Award-Special Mention. He was also the producer of award-winning film, Ninne Pelladata in 1996. The movie later won the National Film Award for Best Feature Film in Telugu.He worked in some notable biographical films, including LOC Kargil and 1997 film Annamayya. A drama film Geetanjali directed by Mani Ratnam proved to be a milestone in his cinematic career as it won the National Film Award for Best Popular Film Providing Wholesome Entertainment. He worked in action film, Siva which was a commercially successful blockbuster at the box office. Nagarjuna made his Bollywood debut with Shiva (1998). Noted biographical devotional movie, Annamayya was also one of the biggest hits in the cinematic career of Nagarjuna for which he won the National Film Award-Special Mention. He is also the president of Hyderabad-based Annapurna International School of Film and Media which is a non-profit film school.
