Viswanathan “Vishy” Anand or simply put, Viswanathan Anand is a world-famous and one of the most distinctively talented chess grandmasters who also holds a world chess champion record. He was born on 11 December 1969 at India’s Mayiladuthurai of Tamil Nadu in the family of Krishnamurthy Viswanathan (father) and mother Sushila. His father, now retired, was working as a general manager of Southern Railways. His mother is also a notable socialite, apart from being a devoted chess enthusiast. Among three siblings in his family, Anand is the youngest one. Under the tutelage of his mother, Anand grew up learning elementary knowledge in chess from age six. He did his schooling at Don Bosco Matriculation Higher Secondary School based in Egmore of Chennai. He is a Commerce graduate from Chennai’s Loyola College. Anand tied the knot with Aruna in the year 1996. The couple has a son named Akhil. Anand joined a foundation by the name of Olympic Gold Quest (OGQ) which promotes and supports Indian sportspersons and potential young talent.
At an event participated by 20,486 players at Gujarat University was carried out simultaneous chess at a single venue, a world record of its own. In the event, Anand was the guest of honor. Anand also turned down the honorary doctorate from University of Hyderabad for reasons best known to himself but is believed to have done so to avoid controversy shrouding over his citizenship status.
The year 1988 remained remarkable for Anand as this was the time when he became India’s first grandmaster. During the period of 200 to 2002, he remained an undefeated champion in the sports of World Chess Championship, a feat ever achieved by any Asian. With the stellar performance in the World Chess Championship 2007 which was held in Mexico City from 12 September 2007 to 30 September 2007, Anand won the tournament and the title of World Chess Champion and also defended his title against the Russian opponent, Vladimir Kramnik in 2008. The tournament of 2007 also witnessed Anand being the one and only player who emerged as an unbeatable player. In the world chess championship tournament held in 2010, Anand concluded the game by defending the title against Bulgarian chess grandmaster, VeselinAleksandrovTopalov. He was the winner of the World Rapid Chess Championship in 2003 and 2017. Anand was conferred to the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Award in 1991–92, and the Padma Vibhushan in 2007, the only sportsperson to have received the honor.
